SELF HELP GROUP
In the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCORMP), Self Help Groups (SHGs) play a crucial role in empowering individuals like Roseline Rongpipi and other community members to improve their livelihoods and contribute to economic transformation. SHGs are formed as part of the project’s efforts to promote viable income-generating activities and enhance social mobilization within the communities across various districts in Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya.
Formation and Functioning of SHGs: SHGs are typically formed by a group of individuals within a community who come together to address common socio-economic challenges, pool resources, and support each other in income-generating activities. These groups provide a platform for members to receive training, access credit facilities, engage in collective decision-making, and implement various projects aimed at improving their economic well-being.
Support and Training Provided: NERCORMP provides continuous support and training to SHGs through capacity-building initiatives focused on operational and management aspects. Members are trained on financial literacy, savings mobilization, entrepreneurship skills, and specific income-generating activities such as agriculture, livestock rearing, handicrafts production, etc. This training equips SHG members like Roseline with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage their group activities and ventures.
Impact on Livelihoods: The establishment of SHGs under NERCORMP has had a significant impact on the livelihoods of individuals like Roseline. By engaging in activities like ginger cultivation, livestock rearing, handicraft production, and eventually setting up a bakery unit, members have been able to generate sustainable incomes for themselves and their families. The success stories emerging from these SHGs demonstrate how collective action can lead to economic empowerment and poverty alleviation at the grassroots level. CDS being a project partner of NERCORMP formed 83 Self Help Group and provide training, handholding support and help them to avail credit from bank.
