BACKGROUND
Mr. Thangbiakmuan is a resident of Thanlon village, which is located in the Churachandpur district of Manipur, India. He has been living there for his entire life, following the traditional practice of Jhuming cultivation. Jhuming is a type of shifting cultivation where land is cleared and farmed for a few years before being left to fallow for several years. In this case, Mr. Thangbiakmuan primarily cultivates rice as a staple crop, but the high altitude (3819 feet above sea level) results in lower production yields.
FAMILY AND EDUCATION
Mr. Thangbiakmuan has a family of six members, including three daughters, a son, and his wife. He sent all four of his children to school at the Convention English School Thanlon, managing their education while working as a farmer and seasonal laborer. The cost of his children’s education proved to be a significant financial hardship for the family, limiting their ability to maximize their income.
INTERVENTION: THEIHUAN-1 PROJECT
THEIHUAN-1 project aimed to improve agricultural productivity in the region by introducing improved farming practices and technologies to farmers like Mr. Thangbiakmuan. As part of the project, he received training on various aspects of agriculture, such as seed selection, land preparation, and pest management. This intervention allowed him to increase his agricultural knowledge and skills and adopt more efficient farming techniques that could lead to higher yields and better income for his family.
IMPACT OF THE THEIHUAN PROJECT
The provided text describes the positive impact of the THEIHUAN PROJECT on a farmer’s income. The project provided support for the farmer to cultivate various fruits, including pineapple, orange, parkia, and pomegranate.
INCOME GENERATION:
The farmer received a total income of Rs. 1,20,000 from January 2020 to March 2024. This income was generated from the sale of fruits cultivated with the support of the THEIHUAN PROJECT.
The income increased steadily each year, indicating the success of the project in improving the farmer’s livelihood. The income generated in 2020 was Rs. 15,750, followed by Rs. 17,270 in 2021, Rs. 21,680 in 2022, Rs. 30,500 in 2023, and Rs. 34,780 in 2024.
The income from the farm has been instrumental in supporting the education of the individual’s children. According to the testimony, a significant portion of the farm’s income has been allocated towards their children’s education. One of the eldest daughters was able to complete her 10+2 education in Churachandpur in the year 2023. This educational milestone was achieved through the support received from the THEIHUAN project.
THEIHUAN project has played a crucial role in providing additional income to sustain the family, thereby enabling them to support their children’s education. The project’s contribution has been significant in ensuring that the children receive the necessary education, despite any financial constraints.
THEIHUAN PROJECT has had a significant positive impact on the farmer’s income, enabling him to generate a substantial income from his farm.
